What is Green Gamification?

Green Gamification is a technique that uses playful elements (gamification) to promote sustainable (green) behaviour. A phenomenon that is spreading rapidly in various sectors and which, according to many researchers, seems to be the most effective approach to facilitate learning about sustainability and make global challenges more understandable.

Many solutions, one goal

Green Gamification can be applied in many ways: from apps to loyalty programmes, from competitions to quizzes. Whatever the medium, its objective always remains the same: to make eco-sustainability fun and rewarding, improving the relationship between man and nature through play.

Gamification, in fact, is a strategy that takes its cue from the psychology of games and applies game mechanics, such as points, levels, challenges and rewards, to non-game contexts in order to encourage involvement and the adoption of certain behaviours. In Green Gamification, these playful elements are used to promote ecologically sustainable behaviour and environmental conservation.

Making the promotion of ethical and sustainable behaviour fun seems to be a path already taken by many Big Companies around the world, such as Toyota or SAP, to name a few. Perhaps the key to success is to remain a bit of a child after all…
